FiberTally answers a small, practical question: how much fiber is in what you are eating, and how close does that bring you to a day's worth? It is for people who have been told to eat more of it, or who want to, and would rather look a number up than guess.
Where the grams come from
Every one of the 961 food rows carries a source note naming USDA FoodData Central. For 924 of them that note gives the FNDDS 2021-2023 survey set and the row's own FDC ID; the remaining 37 are common foods entered for this site, citing the database's total dietary fiber nutrient. All pages read from that one dataset, so a guide's table and a food page show the same figure.
Total fiber is the measured number. The soluble and insoluble split shown beside it is a category-based estimate, labelled as such, because FoodData Central does not report a soluble fraction for most foods. Serving sizes are typical portions, not what is in your bowl, so treat each figure as a planning value.
Who is behind it
A lone independent developer builds and runs FiberTally. It is not a clinic or a nutrition practice, and it is not affiliated with the USDA. The same person runs several other single-subject sites, among them ProteinTally, PantrySwap, HerbMate and Matcha Almanac.
FiberTally's 8 guides go out under its own name. None has an individual byline; in the markup behind each one, authorship belongs to the FiberTally organization. No dietitian, registered practitioner or clinical qualification is claimed anywhere on the site. The guides link to individual food pages, so a figure quoted in a guide can be checked against the food it describes.
What a tally cannot do
It cannot tell you what your gut will tolerate. A sudden jump in fiber can bring bloating and discomfort, and people with a digestive condition, or on medicines whose absorption fiber can affect, should plan changes with a doctor or registered dietitian. The calculator's daily targets are the Dietary Reference Intake Adequate Intake values for total fiber by age and sex, a population figure rather than a prescription, and the site never sees your symptoms.
Corrections and contact
If a figure here disagrees with FoodData Central, that is a defect. Send the page and the number you expected to [email protected]. A correction is made once, in the dataset, and every page reading from it picks it up.
